The Dallas Baptist Baseball Team will travel over Fall Break to the tiny island of Curacao, located just north of Venezuela and to the east of Aruba. This will be DBU Baseball's third overseas trip as part of the Dallas Baptist University Global Sports Mission Initiative, which they helped begin in 2007 with a visit to Guatemala and a 2011 tour in the Dominican Republic. Forty-five members of the DBU community will travel to Curacao in October as coaches, players, and support staff look to help spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the sport of baseball to the constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Curacao is a Dutch, Papiamentu, and English-speaking country of about 150,000 people spread over 171 square miles. Baseball is one of the most popular sports on the island, as 14 Major League players are natives of the country including Texas Ranger Jurickson Profar. Curacao is also home to the 2004 Little League team that won the Little League World Series over the U.S. team from Thousand Oaks, California.
The DBU Baseball Team will host several baseball clinics during their stay in Curacao including one in conjunction with a VBS program at Grasia Abundante Church. The team will also spend time in orphanages, and attend worship services at local places of worship. This will be a great opportunity for these athletes to use their God-given gifts to reach young men and women with the message of Jesus Christ and His unfailing love. DBU will also have the opportunity to showcase their talents as they participate in competition on the field of play against some of the best athletes on the island.
The GSMI is always a life-altering event for student-athletes at DBU, one that is quickly brought to the forefront anytime alumni are asked about their most memorable moments in a DBU uniform. The GSMI is a special time for athletes from DBU to represent the university, our country, and most importantly our Savior, as they serve and compete to glorify His Name.
