THE LEADA cold shooting night from the field combined with 34 points from preseason All-American Ryan Stephan led to DBU's first loss of the season, as the Patriots fell 91-76 to Colorado Mesa in their second game of the Heartland Conference vs. Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tip-Off in Lakewood, Colorado. The Patriots (1-1) held Stephan in check in the first half, limiting the 6'10" 250 pound senior to just two points, before he erupted for 32 points over the final 20 minutes.
Â
Trailing by as many as 13 points with 11:25 remaining in the first half, DBU's full court pressure ignited a 15-2 run for the Patriots to tie the game at 21 apiece. DBU would eventually go up by five, 30-25, but could not maintain the lead, as the two teams ended the half tied at 33.
Â
Colorado Mesa (1-1) would storm out of the break to score the first 11 points and never relinquished the lead. DBU climbed back with a run of their own to draw within one point at 49-48, but the Mavericks turned to the inside presence of Stephan to pull away, as Colorado Mesa's center scored 27 points over the final 11:50.
