THE LEADThe Dallas Baptist Baseball Team passed their first road test of the season with a dramatic 9-6 win over No. 21 Baylor at Baylor Ballpark on Tuesday night. Tied 6-6 in the top of the ninth, an RBI single by
Camden Duzenack proved to be the game-winner, as
Nash Knight came home to score from third base to put the Patriots on top.Â
Â
DBU (4-0) would go on to score two more runs in the inning, courtesy of a of a wild pitch by Baylor closer, Sean Spicer, and a passed ball, before
Brandon Koch came out of the pen to record his first save of the season.
Â
In a back-and-forth game from start to finish, DBU opened up a two run lead in the first inning when
Drew Turbin came in to score the first run on a fielder's choice off the bat of
Justin Wall.Â
Camden Duzenack would then come in to score on a wild pitch, which would prove to be a theme for the Bears' pitching staff, as Baylor pitchers totaled four costly wild pitches on the night.
Baylor (3-1) responded with a three run second inning to take the lead, with the go ahead run scoring on a pick-off move by DBU starter,
Jay Calhoun, that resulted in Baylor turning it into a successful double steal. Hayden Ross came into score on the play, sliding underneath the tag of
Daniel Salters and giving Baylor a 3-2 advantage.
Â
The Patriots took the lead back in the top of the fourth as Knight delivered a two out two run single on a line drive back up the middle. Following Knight's at bat,
Drew Turbin blasted a shot over the head of Baylor center fielder, Logan Brown, plating
Tagg Duce and Knight to push DBU ahead 6-3.
Â
The Bears responded in their half of the fourth with some help from the Patriot pitching staff. With the bases loaded and just one out, DBU starter,
Jay Calhoun, hit Darryn Sheppard with a pitch to bring home the fourth Baylor run of the night. After Calhoun exited from the game,
Sean Stutzman proceeded to hit the very next two batters, allowing the Bears to knot the game at six.
Â
In a battle between the bullpens over the next four innings, DBU's Stutzman and
Chance Adams silenced the Baylor bats and held the Bears scoreless through the eighth inning.
Â
Following the three run ninth by DBU that was highlighted by Duzenack's RBI single to put the Patriots ahead,
Brandon Koch made his way out of the bullpen. After putting runners at first and third on a walk and a single, Koch proceeded to strike out Cameron Miller. With one out, Koch then struck out Jonathan Ducoff and
Daniel Salters threw out Logan Brown attempting to steal second to complete a double play and hand the Patriots their fourth straight win of the season.
