No. 15 DBU Rallies for 5-4 Win Over Salukis

THE LEAD
A Daniel Salters solo home run in the top of the ninth helped No. 15 Dallas Baptist complete a 5-4 comeback win over Southern Illinois on Saturday at "Itchy" Jones Stadium in Carbondale, Illinois.  Trailing 4-2 in the eighth, a bases loaded, two-out double by Nash Knight tied the game at four apiece and set the stage for Salters' heroics.  On the mound, the Patriots' Chance Adams tossed three and two-third innings, allowing just one run, while striking out six to earn the win.

DBU (31-9, 12-5) struck for the game's two runs in the third inning.  After back-to-back singles from David Martinelli and Nash Knight to start the frame, Drew Turbin laid down a sacrifice bunt on the right side of the diamond that plated Martinelli and put the Patriots on top, 1-0.  Three batters later, Justin Wall laced a two-out single to left that brought home Knight.

Leading 2-0 in the bottom of the third, Southern Illinois (10-34, 5-9) touched Patriot starter, Cory Taylor, for a run when Dyllin Mucha came in to score on a ground out to second off the bat of Will Farmer.

In the bottom of the fifth with DBU leading 2-1, the Salukis' Parker Osborne blasted a two-run home run to left center off of Taylor, giving Southern Illinois a 3-2 advantage.  Taylor would work into the sixth, before being lifted for Adams with a runner at second and nobody out.  Adams fanned the first two batters he faced and then induced a ground ball by Farmer to get out of the jam.

SIU added a run in the seventh off of Adams when Tyler Rolland laced a double down the left field line, scoring Osborne from first and opening up a 4-2 lead.

Facing the Saluki's Ryan Sablotny in the eighth, a lead-off single by Wall opened the door for a DBU rally.  After Sablotny retired Chane Lynch on a ground out, SIU's starter was lifted for Ryan Netemeyer, who proceeded to walk the first two batters he faced.  Following a Martinelli strike out, Knight ripped a two-out double down the right field line, scoring both Wall and Tagg Duce to even the game at four.

With Netemeyer back on the mound in the ninth, Daniel Salters stepped to the plate with one out.  On the first pitch he saw, Salters smashed a towering shot over the right field wall to give DBU a 5-4 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, Adams retired the first two men he faced, before giving way to Brandon Koch.  With two out and nobody on, Koch fanned Osborne to close out the game and earn his ninth save of the year.

DBU HEAD COACH, DAN HEEFNER – ON THE COMEBACK WIN
"I was really proud of the way be battled today.  To be a championship team, you've got to have comeback wins like that.  We actually talked today with the team before the game about the history of our program and about the last time we came here in 2011.  That was our Super Regional year and we didn't get off to a good start that season.  We came here to Southern Illinois and lost the first game and then had a huge comeback win that got us rolling that year.  That's really been the story of our program.  It's guys that are tough and have a belief late in the game.  We also talked about how we've been able to have those same type of wins this year and we saw that again today from a group of guys that kept fighting and believing to the end."
