THE LEADA complete game effort from junior right-hander
Cory Taylor ignited Dallas Baptist to an 8-1 win over Texas in an elimination game at the Dallas Regional on Sunday. In front of a record crowd of 3,242 at Horner Ballpark, Taylor struck out a season-high 10 batters and allowed just three hits to help lift (DBU 44-14) to the win. With the victory over the Longhorns, the Patriots advance to a match-up later tonight versus the loser of the Oregon State and Virginia Commonwealth game.Â
Along with Taylor's gem on the mound was a career-best six RBI performance from
Justin Wall. After a
Drew Turbin double in the third inning broke a scoreless tie, Wall kick-started his remarkable day at the plate by blasting his 11th home run of the season on a three-run shot over the fence in right to give the Patriots a 4-0 lead.Â
Â
With Texas (30-27) starter, Ty Culbreth, out of the game after three innings of work and facing righty Connor Mayes, Wall delivered a line shot to center field in the fourth to bring home
Camden Duzenack with the fifth run of the day for the DBU offense. In the sixth, the Patriots struck for two more runs as Wall laced a single to left to plate Turbin, followed by an RBI base hit from
Daniel Salters.
Â
With a 7-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth, the Longhorns struck for their lone run of the day on a two-out single by Tres Barrera that brought in Joe Baker from second base. That would be the lone blemish on the day for Taylor, who would throw a career-high 133 pitches.
Â
In the top of the eighth, Wall capped off his spectacular day at the plate with a single to right, driving in his sixth run, as Duzenack touched home.
Â
Going into the bottom of the ninth with a commanding 8-1 lead, Taylor emerged from the dugout to a standing ovation from the Patriot crowd. A strikeout of Collin Shaw for the second out of the inning gave Taylor his season-high 10th strikeout of the game. With two outs and runners at first and second, Taylor got Brooks Marlow to fly out to center field to finish Texas' season and keep the Patriots alive in the Dallas Regional.
DBU HEAD COACH, DAN HEEFNER - ON THE WIN AND CORY TAYLOR'S PERFORMANCE"That was a huge win for the season, obviously it was a must win for us as we had to win the game to keep going. To be able to host a regional, we wanted to be able to show well in this and to just have the excitement around the program and to do it against the University of Texas too, knowing how big that is in the state and what that does for our university and the program was really big. I couldn't be more proud of Cory, that's by far the best outing we've had this year and one of the best since I've been here at DBU. Just when you think about the whole situation and how we went about it, I thought it was a whole team effort. The guys really played well today."Â
