THE LEADThe Dallas Baptist Volleyball Team dropped their second straight match on the road falling to the Newman University Jets in four sets, 3-1.
Jenna Elkins led DBU with 14 kills and
Kaycie Bird logged 29 assists.
In set one with the score tied 9-9, Newman would begin to pull away from Dallas Baptist scoring three straight points to go up 12-9. The Lady Patriots would then call a timeout during the set and responded by scoring four of the next six points to trail 14-13. With DBU right on their trail, Newman would begin to separate from the Lady Patriots, as they put together short two and three point streaks, leading to a 25-20 win in the first set.
Set two would see DBU and Newman knotted at 15 apiece before the Jets found another opportunity to pull away, taking advantage of Dallas Baptist attack errors to go up 18-15. From there, the Jets built on their lead with a 20-16 margin, but back to back kills by
Jenna Elkins and a service ace by
Kaycie Bird brought DBU back to within one point at 20-19. DBU would hang around late in the set, but it would not be enough as Newman went on to claim set two 25-21 and go up 2-0.
The third set of the afternoon would see another tight start between the Jets and Lady Patriots with the score tied at 5-5. Back-to-back points by DBU gave them a 7-5 advantage, but that was soon erased as Newman replied with five straight points of their own to take the lead 10-7. Not phased by the Newman rally, behind big kills from
Brooke Manley, DBU scored seven of the next eight points to gain a 14-11 upper hand over the Jets. Late in the set, Dallas Baptist went up by as many as five points with a 20-15 lead. A late rally by the Jets though pulled them to within one point at 22-21 before the Lady Patriots pulled away to close out the set 25-21.
Newman would start off set four with an early lead 4-2 over Dallas Baptist, which DBU countered by scoring two of the next three points to come within one point trailing 5-4. As the set progressed, Newman pulled away from the Lady Patriots, going up by as many as six points with a 16-10 lead. Persistence by DBU allowed them to cut Newman's lead down to two points late in the set trailing 24-22, but it would be too late as a kill by the Jets won the set 25-22 and the match 3-1.
