Patriots Fall 6-2 at No. 25 Rice

THE LEAD
No. 26 DBU fell for the first time in 2016, dropping a 6-2 decision to No. 25 Rice on Tuesday night at Reckling Park in Houston, Texas.  After jumping out to a 2-0 advantage though the first four-and-a-half innings, Rice tied the game at two apiece in the fifth and then took the lead for good with a three-run sixth.  The Owls would also add an insurance run in the seventh.

DBU (3-1) struck early in the first inning when a ground ball off the bat of Justin Wall resulted in a throwing error from Rice's shortstop, Proctor Ford, allowing Camden Duzenack to score from third.  The error was one of three committed by the Owls in the first.

In the fourth inning, Matt Duce delivered a double to right, advancing Wall to third.  With one out and runners at second and third, David Martinelli grounded out to the right side of the diamond, allowing Wall to score.

Up 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Rice (2-2) tied the game on a Charlie Warren two-run single off of reliever, Landon Wilson.  Following Warran's game-tying hit, Eric White came in relief of Wilson and retired the next two batters to get out of the jam.

With the game tied at two apiece in the bottom of the sixth, Sean Stutzman took the mound with one out and runners on the corners.  On a bunt single by the Owls' Ryan Chandler, Proctor crossed the plate with the go-ahead run.  Two batters later, Stutzman walked Grayson Lewis, putting Rice up 4-2.  Warren then delivered his third RBI of the night when he hit into a fielders choice, allowing Chandler to score.

In the seventh, Rice added one more run on a wild pitch from Gavin Fritz.  DBU would not threaten the rest of the way, as Nick Orewiler closed out the Patriots over the final three innings to earn the save.
