THE LEADThe Dallas Baptist University Men's Basketball team lost to Rogers State in double overtime by a score of 97-94 on Monday night. In front of a crowd of 1,589 at the Burg Center, the Patriots honored the team's seniors in their final home game of the regular season.
Patrick Burke led the team with 22 points on nine-for-14 shooting with 11 rebounds.
Shannon Lilly and
Jonathan Perry joined Burke in double figures with 18 apiece, and
Joey Miller added 13 points. Lilly and Miller each registered six assists.
After the Patriots went down 8-4 by the 16:16 mark, DBU went on a 7-0 run from over the next 41 seconds to take the first lead of the game at 11-8. The Patriots and Hillcats battled back-and-forth throughout the first half, as the lead changed nine times over the final 11 minutes of the half. Against a defense averaging a Heartland Conference best 3.81 blocks per game, Burke battled in the paint for 15 points and five rebounds in the first half.
In just his fourth start of the season, Perry went three-for-six from beyond the arc, including back-to-back threes early in the second half to give the Patriots their largest lead at 48-42. DBU took advantage of a 0-for-7 shooting drought by Rogers State midway through the second half to extend its lead to 58-49. The Hillcats responded with six straight made field goals to take their first lead since the 1:43 mark of the first half at 65-64. Perry added four points over the next minute to regain the lead at 68-65.
From the 3:41-2:31 mark, Rogers State went on a 9-0 run including a crucial flagrant foul called on Perry that led to two converted free throws and a Robert Johnson layup to go ahead 74-70.
Shannon Lilly provided a key block and two three pointers in the final two minutes to force the game into overtime at 76-76.
Ahead 88-86 with a minute remaining in the first overtime, Lilly recorded another block with 2.9 seconds left, leaving the Hillcats just enough time to even the score and force a second overtime period.
Patrick Burke scored his first points since the early moments of the second half to give DBU a 92-90 lead midway through the second overtime. In the second overtime, Perry continued his success from the charity stripe with two more converted free throws to take a 94-92 lead. A Corey Ayala layup tied the game at 94 apiece, and Donald Moore hit a three pointer with 2.1 seconds left to clinch the win.
