DBU Suffers 8-3 Loss in Series Opener to Baylor

THE LEAD
No. 29 DBU dropped game one of a three-game series to Baylor 8-3 on Thursday night at Baylor Ballpark in Waco, Texas.  Despite jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, the Patriots were not able to overcome a pair of three-run innings and a 13-hit attack by the Bears in the loss.

DBU (14-7) opened the scoring in the top of the second when Austin Listi came into score on a ground out to the right side of the diamond off the bat of Matt Duce.  Camden Duzenack then followed with a two-out single to put the Patriots on top 2-0.

After Baylor (9-12) scratched a run across in their half of the second, the Bears touched Patriots' starter Darick Hall for three runs in the third, highlighted by a an RBI double from Levi Gilcrease and a one-run single by Josh Bissonette, all with two outs.

In the top of the fourth, Darick Hall would help his cause as he blasted his team-leading 10th home run of the year with a towering solo-shot over the right field wall.  That would be as close as DBU would draw though, as Baylor struck for three more runs in the sixth to extend their lead to 7-3.

The Bears added one more insurance run in the bottom of the seventh when Steven McLean laced a two-out single, putting Baylor ahead 8-3.

DBU HEAD COACH, DAN HEEFNER, ON BAYLOR'S TWO-OUT APPROACH
"I thought they had a really good approach at the plate and their ability to get hits in two out situations was one of the big differences tonight.  They were also able to get key hits in two-strike counts as well."

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Darick Hall hit his fifth home run in the last two games.
- Joe Heineman and Kyle Ott combined to throw 4.2 innings of shutout relief for the Bears.
- DBU used four relief pitchers in MD Johnson, Gavin Fritz, Landon Wilson, and Coby Weaver
