THE LEADOne day after a record setting performance at Santa Ana Field in Albuquerque, New Mexico, DBU mounted a valiant comeback to finish off a three game sweep of the No. 24 New Mexico Lobos. The Patriots fell behind 10-1 in the third and then 11-2 in the fourth before scoring the final 10 runs of the game en route to an exhilarating 12-11 victory. The win capped off a perfect 4-0 week for DBU.
Sean Stutzman earned his second win of the season, while
Seth Elledge picked up his fourth save.
Â
The Patriots struck first against Lobo starter Colton Thomson after back-to-back two-out singles from
Darick Hall and
Trooper Reynolds. It was Reynolds' single that delivered the games first run, scoring
David Martinelli from second base.
Â
The lead would be short-lived as the Lobos responded in the bottom of the inning with five runs off of DBU starter
Dalton Higgins, capped off by a two-run triple from Erick Migueles. The Lobos padded their lead to 7-1 in the second, bringing
MD Johnson in from the pen in relief of Higgins.
Â
The Lobos would extend their lead again in the bottom of the third when they plated three runs on three hits. The biggest blow came in the form of a Luis Gonzales double that gave New Mexico a commanding 10-1 advantage.
Â
The Patriots would get a run back in the top of the fourth after
Darick Hall reached on an error to lead off the inning. Hall was standing on third base when
Luke Stratman delivered a two-out single into center to plate the Patriots second run and cut the deficit to 10-2.
Â
New Mexico got that run back in the bottom of the fourth after a Jared Mang sacrifice fly. The Patriots came to the plate in the top of the fifth down 11-2 and needing to start a rally.
Â
The Patriots began their comeback with a single run in the fifth and sixth innings thanks to a
Luke Stratman bases loaded walk, his tenth RBI in two days, and a
Jameson Hannah RBI single which cut the lead to 11-4 heading into the sixth inning.
Â
In the sixth, the Patriots would put up their first crooked number of the evening.
Garrett Wolforth led things off with a single to right, followed by a
Camden Duzenack bunt single, and another Hannah RBI single. With the score 11-5,
Justin Wall walked before Hall hit a sharp line drive to center which plated the second run of the inning on a sacrifice fly. After a Reynolds single, it was
Austin Listi who came through with a two RBI base hit that got the Patriots within striking distance at 11-7.
Â
In the seventh, a Wolforth leadoff double and a one out walk from Hannah set the table for the third Hall homerun of the series. This time, Hall hammered the first pitch he saw deep and gone to right to bring DBU to within one run at 11-10, capping a remarkable week that saw the first year Patriot hit .647 (11 for 17).
Â
After
Gavin Fritz finished his second scoreless frame in the seventh, the Patriots offense would finally draw even in the eighth. Listi led off the inning with a single and promptly stole second. On the steal, the ball got away from Chris DeVito behind the plate and Listi advanced from first to third. With one out,
Daniel Sweet laced a ball passed a drawn in infield to tie the game at 11.
Â
In the bottom of the eighth, Stutzman put up the pitching staff's fourth consecutive zero, setting the stage for the Patriot ninth. Hannah got the offense going in the ninth with a one out single before a Wall single moved him to third base with one out. With Hall at the plate, Lobo closer Victor Sanchez, bounced a ball that got by DeVito allowing Hannah to come home to make the score 12-11 and completing the Patriot comeback.
Â
In the bottom of the ninth, DeVito led off with a single before Jack Zoellzner struck out swinging against Elledge.
