THE LEAD
DBU was not able to hold onto a three-run lead going into the final three innings in Stillwater, Oklahoma, as the Patriots fell 8-7 in 11 innings to No. 12 Oklahoma State on Tuesday night at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium. Tied at seven apiece with two outs in the bottom of the 11th, OSU's Corey Hassel singled through the middle to bring home the winning run, as the Cowboys walked-off the Patriots and knocked off DBU for the second time this year by one run.
Â
DBU (32-15) struck for two runs in the first inning off of OSU (31-15) starter, Garrett Williams, who struggled early to find his command. After walking the Patriots' lead-off man,
Daniel Sweet, Williams loaded the bases by hitting the next two batters in the order. With the bases full, a ground out off the bat of
Darick Hall plated a run, followed by a
Trooper Reynolds sacrifice fly.
Â
In the bottom of the second, the Cowboys answered when Collin Theroux belted a grand slam over the wall in left off of Patriot starter,
MD Johnson. Down 4-2 to OSU going to the top of the fourth, the Patriots tied the game on
Trooper Reynolds' second home run of the season, a two-run shot to left-center.
In the fifth, DBU broke the 4-4 tie on an RBI single from
David Martinelli. Â One inning later, the Patriots added two more runs when
Garrett Wolforth drove in a run on his first career triple and
Tim Millard followed with a base hit to drive in Wolforth.
Â
After
Landon Wilson and
Gavin Fritz pieced together three-and-one-third innings of scoreless relief,
Sean Stutzman came out of the pen to work out of a second and third, one-out jam in the sixth and kept the Patriot lead at 7-4.
Â
OSU would answer though in the seventh, as Ryan Sluder ripped a triple to bring in a run and cut the Patriot lead to 7-5. One batter later, pinch hitter, Andrew Rosa, laced a single into center to bring in Sluder and cut the deficit to one.Â
Â
With
Seth Elledge on the mound in the ninth, Sluder led off the inning with a double and two batters later Jon Littell tripled to score the tying run. Elledge would eventually escape the ninth with the game tied at seven, getting a strikeout and a fly out to end the inning.
Â
In a battle between two of the top closers in the nation, OSU's Tyler Buffett worked three scoreless innings and the Cowboys eventually chased Elledge from the game going to the eleventh.Â
Â
With Elledge out after two innings of work, freshman
Jimmy Fouse made his third appearance of the season and surrendered a one-out walk to Garrett McCain. McCain eventually stole second before Theroux flied out to center. With two outs, J.R. Davis was intentionally walked to set up first and second with two outs. Fouse would exit for sophomore right-hander
Eric White and on a a 2-2 pitch to Corey Hassell, a base hit back through the middle scored the winning run.
