THE LEAD
The Dallas Baptist University Women's Soccer team defeated Newman University, 2-1, in extra time on Thursday evening at Wilkins Field in Wichita, Kansas.
Rebecca Kernen netted the game winner just over four minutes into overtime after taking on a defender at the top of the box and putting a shot past goalkeeper Kelsi Langley while falling to the ground.
Emmy Niece put the Patriots on the board first in the 27th minute off of a
Geneva Martinez corner kick. The Jets scored the equalizer nine minutes later in similar fashion, as Cydney Padilla finished off a corner from Emma Stewart.Â
Hope Koym provided the key play of the game, making a save on a penalty kick attempt in the 87th minute to force the game into extra time. Koym made a season-high 11 saves in the match.
