Lady Patriots Take Down Newman University in Three Sets

THE RUNDOWN
The Lady Patriots got the road win tonight against Newman in three straight sets. After coming off a six game losing streak, the Lady Patriots have started to gain some traction. After beating Texas A&M International 3-0 they get another road win in just three sets again. The offense has definitely improved lately and that continued tonight with Sidnee Jo Fitzpatrick finishing with a game-high 13 kills along with Kasey Holand adding 11 kills of her own.

Despite a 3-0 victory each set remained pretty close until the end. The first set stayed close until the end where DBU, leading 16-15, scored five of the next six points to take a 21-16 lead. Brooke Clark and Kasey Holand would get a few kills to seal the deal and DBU would win the set 25-19. The second set provided a lot of back and forth action with both teams scoring points in bunches and the lead would go back and forth. With the set tied at 19-19, DBU would score four in a row to go up 23-19 before eventually winning the set 25-23. Newman started the third set well and got out to a small but early lead. With DBU trailing 13-16, they would go on another run and score six points in a row to take a 19-16 lead. Newman fought back and reclaimed the lead with a score of 22-23, but a kill from Sidnee Jo Fitzpatrick and Kasey Holand let DBU take a 24-23 lead before Newman would commit a handling error giving a point to DBU to let them win the set and the match.

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • The Lady Patriots did a good job of not letting Newman get out to a sizeable lead. In the third set they started to let Newman get out to a quick lead, but did a good job in coming back. They've struggled in playing from behind this season, but did a good job of not letting that happen tonight.
  • The Lady Patriots didn't record a block in tonight's match. Their blocking ability has been something they've leaned on this season, so tonight shows they can still win when it's not there.
  • This is the first time DBU has won consecutive matches since winning a double-header back on September 2nd.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
4- The Lady Patriots had four players reach at least 7 digs tonight. Having multiple players defend well really helped out tonight.
7- DBU saw seven players record a kill tonight. The defense played balanced as well as the offense tonight.
34- Strealy Sizelove and Merci Perry combined for 34 assists tonight. Usually one or the other ends with a high number of assists, so it's good to see both of them set their teammates up effectively.

UP NEXT
The Lady Patriots travel to Arkansas this weekend to take on UA-Fort Smith this Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. match. That match will conclude a 5-game road trip for the Lady Patriots.
