THE LEAD
DBU starter
Ray Gaither put together the longest outing from a Patriot starting pitcher on the season, but his six innings of work went for naught as Missouri State (19-10, 4-0) scored in four different innings to outlast DBU, 5-1. The Patriots (18-11, 3-1) did not record a hit in the contest until the sixth inning and were unable to put together a real threat against Bears' starter Jordan Knutson, who struck out a career-high 13 batters on the night at Hammons Field in Springfield, Missouri.
Â
As the Patriot offense struggled to get anything started against Knutson, the Bears plated single runs in both the second and third innings off Gaither. Both runs came with two outs in the respective frames, one on a home run by Blake Graham and the second on a soft single to left field after a leadoff walk and sacrifice bunt.
Â
The Bears added to their lead with a two-run homerun from Justin Paulsen in the fifth inning before DBU finally cracked the scoreboard against Knutson. With one out in the sixth inning, DBU recorded their first hit of the game when
Jameson Hannah belted his seventh homerun of the season, a solo shot to left center that made the score 4-1.
Â
Jimmy Fouse came on in relief of Gaither to begin the seventh inning and gave up a solo homerun to the first batter he faced to extend the lead to four. Fouse settled in from there to strand a runner and complete the inning with no further damage.
Sean Boyle threw a scoreless eighth inning in his sixth appearance on the year.
