THE LEAD
DBU won their fourth straight weekend series as they defeated Wichita State, 10-9, in the weekend finale on Sunday afternoon at Horner Ballpark.
Austin Listi went 2-for-3 with a team-high four RBI to lead the Patriot offense.
Â
MD Johnson (3-2) earned his third straight win, despite allowing eight runs on nine hits, but struck out five Shockers. Connor Lungwitz (1-1) suffered the loss after giving up a go-ahead two-run homerun to
Tim Millard.
Seth Elledge (9) picked up the five-out save, striking out three of the six batters he faced.
Â
WSU scored in the first inning for the third time in the weekend series, putting up two runs on a pair of RBI singles. DBU cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning after
Jameson Hannah led off the inning with a triple and scored on a
Devlin Granberg sac fly. The Patriots took the lead three batters later on a two-run blast from
Camden Duzenack to make it 3-2. In the top of the second, the Shockers regained the lead at 4-3 on a two-run homerun from Dayton Dugas. WSU extended the lead to 7-3 in the third on a bases-clearing double by Jordan Boyer.
Â
The lead changed for the third time in the bottom of the third inning, when DBU put up a five-spot, fueled by a pair of two-run blasts from Listi and
Tim Millard. The Patriots extended the lead in the following inning by way of a Listi RBI double to make it 9-7. Johnson had retired nine straight Shockers, before a
Luke Bandy error set up Greyson Jenista for an RBI double to cut the lead to 9-8.
Dan Heefner called upon his bullpen for
Dalton Higgins, who struck out Alec Bohm to end the inning.
Â
DBU regained a two-run advantage at 10-8 in the bottom of the sixth as Listi's sac fly allowed Hannah to score his third run of the ballgame. Heefner went to his pen again with one out in the eighth, bringing in Elledge for the five-out save opportunity. Elledge retired the next two batters to conclude the inning. Bohm led off the top of the ninth with a solo blast off Elledge to cut the Patriot lead in half at 10-9. Elledge retired the next three batters in order to close out WSU and clinch the victory.

COACH DAN HEEFNERÂ - ON SCORING WITH TWO OUTS
"We've been doing that a lot lately. It's been about how it gets started. Yesterday, we had two outs with nobody on, and then
Jameson Hannah walks and that gets everything going. I think we've got guys that can drive in runs and guys that can be very offensive, but it's those little things that allow you to win ballgames. It's great to get a bunch of hits and homeruns and drive balls. Those things put you in a position to win, but it's the little things you do that allow you to win."
AUSTIN LISTI - ON THE KEY TO BOUNCING BACK FROM FRIDAY'S LOSS
"Confidence. No matter what happens in game one, or any game for that matter, the next game we know we have to come out and play our game and be confident. We step on the field, flip the switch on, and it's game on."
