THE RUNDOWN
The DBU Women's Soccer team allowed a goal in the 11th minute at No. 6 St. Edward's on Wednesday, and despite a series of late attacks, could not find the equalizer in the first game of Heartland Conference play. The Patriots allowed only one shot on goal, but that was all the Hilltoppers needed.
Viktoria Malmros put her team on top for good 11:06 into the match with a touch past the goalkeeper on an assist from India Wentz. DBU's defense held SEU to two more shots the rest of the game while putting three of their own on target in the final 79 minutes, but former Patriot
Ocoee Wilson stopped them all.
The Patriots continued their trend of playing stronger late in the game, forcing Wilson to make two saves in the final 13 minutes, but she was up to the task.
THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
 - The Patriots' one shot on goal against was the fewest they had allowed in a game since October 13, 2016, in a 2-0 win over Rogers State.
 -
Abigail Olmos and
Brittany Eccles combined for three shots, all of them on goal. Eccles leads DBU with six shots on goal for the season.
 - The Hilltoppers avenged last season's Heartland Conference Tournament Championship game loss, a 0-0 decision at St. Edward's that went to DBU on penalty kicks.
DBU HEAD COACH MICHELLE LENARDÂ ON STARTING THE CONFERENCE SEASON WITH A TOP-10 OPPONENT
"St. Edward's is a tough opponent and always makes it difficult for us. They fought hard today and came away with a good win. We are playing well overall but not scoring where we should be. We are young and learning to deal with the pressure of these big games. We will continue growing and improving, and I feel confident we are going to start winning these games."
