THE RUNDOWN
The DBU Men's Soccer team closed the 2018 season with a narrow loss to St. Edward's on Saturday by a score of 2-1. The Patriots (3-14-1, 1-13-0 Heartland Conference) took a lead in the 68th minute on
Karl Pitkin's header, but the Hilltoppers (8-8-1, 7-6-1) fought back to earn the win.
Tristen Olvera made nine saves, including a stop of a penalty kick that helped provide momentum for his team in the 61st minute. Minutes later, Pitkin headed in a cross from
Billy Burford to give DBU its first goal since October 11. St. Edward's scored the tying goal after an outstretched Olvera deflected a cross and took the lead on their second penalty shot of the game. Rec cards to
Josue Vazquez and
Ethan Martinez hindered the Patriots' chances of finding an equalizer.
THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
 -
Riley Unger finished the season as the only Patriot to start all 18 games this year.
 - Burford's assist was his first of the year.
 - St. Edward's defeated the Patriots 5-0 earlier in the season in Austin.
COACH CHIP DUTCHIK ON THE VALUE HIS SENIORS ADDED THIS SEASON
"I'm very proud of these guys. They lead by example of what a Christian man is on and off the field. They've meant a lot to this team. Unger's been here for four years and really helped the program take a step forward.
Travis Whitt came in and bought in right away.
Kyle Jobe has helped out now on the coaching staff.
Cory Marr came in last year and was a good encourager and a Christian mentor. They've set the standard of what a DBU soccer player should be, and most importantly, they're going to be good men, good husbands, good fathers, good coaches, teachers, whatever it is, and I'm very proud of them in that aspect.
