THE RUNDOWN
DBU's season ended in an 87-82 loss to Regis in the first round of the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championship South Central Regional. The Patriots (26-6) fought back from a 10-point deficit to cut the Rangers' (27-5) lead to three with seven seconds left, but the Skyhawks made 19 of 25 second-half free throws to ice the victory.
DBU held a seven-point lead with two minutes to play before halftime, but a nearly four-minute scoring drought allowed Regis to tie the game at halftime. Neither team led by more than six in the first ten minutes of the first half, but the Skyhawks extended the lead to 10 with 7:46 to play.
Down by five with 59 seconds to play, the Patriots resorted to fouling intentionally to close the gap. A layup by Chandler Jacobs with seven seconds to play cut the Skyhawk lead to three, but Regis made two of its final four free throws to advance to the second round of the tournament.
Jacobs led the Patriots with 23 points on 8-for-15 shooting from the floor, including a 3-3 performance beyond the arc, and nine rebounds. Boy Van Vliet added 20 points in his final game as a Patriot.
