DBU Defeats No. 22 Sam Houston State to Give Heefner 400th Career Win

THE RUNDOWN
A three-run 10th inning helped lift DBU to a 9-7 win over No. 22 Sam Houston State and gave Patriots' Head Coach Dan Heefner his 400th career win on Friday night at Don Sanders Stadium in Huntsville, Texas.  Tied 6-6 in the top of the 10th with two outs, DBU (12-8) scratched across the go-ahead run when Jameson Hannah reached on an error, plating Garrett Wolforth from third base.  One batter later, Devlin Granberg delivered a two-run single to put the Patriots up by three.  After surrendering one run in the bottom half of the inning, Parker Towns came on to record the final out for his second save of the year.

The Patriots' offense struck early, scoring two runs in the first inning on a two-run homer by Matt Duce, followed by a three-run blast by Hannah in the second.  DBU added their sixth run in the third when Kody Funderburk doubled in Tim Millard to go on top 6-0.

MD Johnson would silence the Sam Houston State (16-6) bats through the first five innings before allowing a solo home run by Andrew Fregia in the sixth.  One inning later, the Bearkats struck for three more runs on home runs from Hunter Hearn and Blake Chisolm.

With DBU leading 6-4 in the ninth, Chisolm's second home run of the night, a two-run blast over the wall in left, tied the game at six apiece.

The Patriots' rally in the 10th would start with a two-out walk to Wolforth, followed by Blayne Jones reaching on a two-base throwing error by third baseman Chase Cryer.  Hannah then kept the inning alive when his groundball was bobbled at first by Blake Chisolm, allowing Wolforth to score.  Granberg's bloop single to right gave the Patriots two more insurance runs that they would need in the bottom of the 10th.

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
- This marked the first extra-inning game of the season for the Patriots.
- The win marked DBU's second victory over a Top 25 team this year.
- MacGregor Hines earned the win to improve to 2-1 on the mound this year.

DBU HEAD COACH DAN HEEFNER ON THE EXTRA-INNING WIN
"I was really proud of them.  I thought we had an outstanding start to the game and MD was as good as he could be.  Offensively, I thought we had a good approach against their number one guy.  We let it get away from us a little there at the end.  That's something that can really deflate a team, but we stuck with it and had a big-time belief to chip away there in the 10th and found a way to win."
