Patriots' Season Ends in Narrow Loss in Regional Final

THE RUNDOWN
No. 3 DBU fell just short of forcing a decisive seventh game in the NCAA Fayetteville Regional, nearly taking down host and No. 5 national seed Arkansas in a 4-3 loss. A ninth-inning rally came up just short in the Patriots' upset bid.

DBU (42-21) scored in the first two innings, as groundouts by Garrett Wolforth and Devlin Granberg drove in runs. The Patriots had at least two runners reach base in each of the first four innings, but Arkansas reliever Jake Reindl, who came in with nobody out and the bases loaded in the first, limited the damage each time.

Kody Funderburk held Arkansas (42-18) hitless over the first two innings and allowed one run on just one hit in the third. Three hits in the fourth led to two more Arkansas runs, putting the Razorbacks in the lead. MacGregor Hines replaced Funderburk on the hill. Aside from a three-hit, one-run rally in the seventh, Hines would hold Arkanas at bay, giving his team a chance to tie or regain the lead.

The Patriots came within inches of tying the game in the sixth, when Granberg turned on a 2-2 slider and hit it over the left field fence, but Arkansas left fielder Heston Kjerstad brought it back for an out.

Granberg led off the top of the ninth with a double and scored on Jimmy Glowenke's sacrifice fly, but the Patriots could not find a way to bring in the tying run, on base in the form of Jameson Hannah.

COACH DAN HEEFNER ON THE PATRIOTS' OFFENSIVE ATTACK
"We were right in the game, we had guys on base, and I thought we had good at-bats all game long. We just didn't get big hits when we had guys on base early in the game."
