THE LEAD
A ninth inning rally fell short for DBU on Friday night, as the Patriots dropped a 4-3 decision to the College of Charleston in game one of a three-game series at the Ballpark at Patriots Point. Down two runs in the ninth, a lead-off home run by
Evan Sandmann drew DBU (23-10) to within one run before the Patriots eventually left
Andres Sosa stranded on third base, as Charleston (23-11) closer, Nathan Ocker struck out
Herbert Iser and
Jimmy Glowenke to end the game.
The Patriots found themselves playing from behind early as the Cougars struck for four runs in the second inning off of DBU starter
Jordan Martinson. The four spot would be the only runs that Martinson would surrender, as the Patriots' senior lefty suffered his first loss of the year after working 6.2 innings.
DBU struck for a pair of runs in the third when
Augie Isaacson laid down a squeeze bunt with two outs to plate Sosa. With runners on the corners, Griffin McLarty's pickoff move to first sailed wide of the bag, allowing Iser to cross home plate and cut the Patriot deficit to two.
DBU would not threaten again until the sixth inning when they had runners at second and third with one out, but were unable to push across any runs.
THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
- The Patriots have now dropped two consecutive weekend series openers.
-
Blayne Jones' team-high 19-game hit streak came to an end in the loss.
-
Kragen Kechely worked 1.1 scoreless innings in relief.
COACH DAN HEEFNER ON THE DIFFERENCE IN THE GAME
"The difference was their two-out approach. The number of hits that they got in the second inning with two strikes because they were willing to give in and move the baseball was really the difference. When we had those same situations with runners in scoring position, we weren't able to produce."
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
2 -

4 -
Evan Sandmann's home run was his fourth of the season.
