Box Score THE LEAD
Despite falling behind 3-0 early in the game, DBU maintained its disciplined approach in a series-clinching 14-4 win over College of Charleston at Patriots Point in Charleston, South Carolina, on Sunday. A six-run rally in the third inning gave the Patriots (25-10) all the offense they would need as the bullpen limited the Cougars (23-13) to one run in 7.1 innings.
After allowing three runs in the bottom of the second, DBU went to work offensively in the top of the third.
Blayne Jones got his team on the board with a two-run single and came around to score on
Jackson Glenn's grand slam later in the inning.
Jarod Bayless, who ended the Charleston rally with a strikeout in the second, cruised through the next four innings, striking out a career-high six batters while walking one batter and allowing just two base hits, both singles.
Andres Sosa added a run in the fourth with a no-doubt home run to left, his second long ball of the season. An
Evan Sandmann sac fly in the fifth and an RBI single by
Herbert Iser in the sixth also padded the Patriot lead.
After the Cougars got a run back in the seventh, the Patriot bats put the game out of reach in the eighth.
Bryce Ball hit a two-run blast, his team-leading eighth home run of the year. Two batters later, Glenn hit his second round tripper of the game, another two-run shot.
Evan Sandmann followed with a solo home run to put the cherry on top.
THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
- The Patriots won a series after losing the first game for the first time in 2019.
- DBU's 14 runs scored were the most allowed by Charleston since 2017.
- The Patriots' three-homer eighth was their second such inning in 2019 after accomplishing the feat March 24 at Air Force.
COACH DAN HEEFNER ON HIS TEAM'S PLATE DISCIPLINE
"I think hitting always starts with the decisions you're making at the plate.and the type of pitches you're swinging at. So I think the nine walks was a great sign. We were laying off pitchers' pitches and swinging at pitches we could get a good swing on. I think the thing I was most proud of - we've had games where things have gone well and we've just kind of stalled - so to put five more runs up in the eighth inning, I think that's a big deal."
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
