Patriots Use Two-Out Hitting to Eliminate Evansville

THE LEAD
No. 22 DBU scored eight times with two outs Thursday in a 9-2 win over Evansville at the MVC Tournament in Normal, Illinois. Herbert Iser was a triple shy of the cycle as the Patriots (40-16) eliminated the Purple Aces (24-29) from the double-elimination tournament.

Andres Sosa and Augie Isaacson hit back-to-back home runs with two outs in the second inning to give DBU a 3-0 lead. A solo homer by Iser in the fourth extended the lead to four.

Jarod Bayless earned the win with 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out two while hitting two. Bayless improved to 7-1 on the season.

Evansville scored on a wild pitch in the fifth, but the Patriots put the game out of reach with a five-run seventh inning. Evan Sandmann's two-out RBI single started the rally, followed by Luke Bandy's two-run double. An infield single by Iser plated another run, and Sosa's RBI double put the finishing touches on the Patriot seventh.

UE got one run back on an eighth-inning solo home run, but Cole Reeves closed out the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
 - DBU won its 40th game of the season, making six straight seasons with 40 wins. The Patriots and Louisville are the only two programs with at least 40 wins in each of the last six years.
 - The bottom three hitters of DBU's order were 6-for-13 with three home runs.
 - The Patriots will face the winner of Illinois State and Indiana's game this evening.

COACH DAN HEEFNER ON THE BOTTOM OF THE ORDER
"Sosa's our glue guy, a big energy guy, and everybody loves him. Everybody likes having him in the lineup, and we've seen that before this season where he gets us going... It's always good to be playing with a lead, and they had great at-bats the rest of the game."

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
.500 - The Patriots were 9-for-18 with two outs.
20 - Bandy recorded his 20th steal of the year, giving DBU two players with at least 20 steals for the first time since 2004 when Drew Noss, Ben Zobrist, and Cody Montgomery each had over 20.
- Iser recorded his third three-hit game of the year.

UP NEXT
DBU will play at 3:00 pm Friday against either Indiana State or Evansville.
