THE LEAD
A big first inning for Indiana State was more than No. 22 DBU could overcome Saturday night in the championship game of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. The Sycamores (41-16) put up six runs in the first in a 16-3 win at Duffy Bass Field in Normal, Illinois.
The Patriots (41-18) trailed 10-0 before
Luke Bandy's RBI single ended the Sycamores' shutout bid in the fourth inning.
Jimmy Fouse kept his team in the game with three scoreless, hitless innings that featured three strikeouts, blemished only by a sole walk.
Indiana State scored six more times in the eighth to invoke the run rule and end the game an inning early.
Austin Bell's would-be three-run homer in the eighth became a two-run single after he passed
Hunter Vansau on the basepaths, as Vansau retreated, thinking the ball had been caught.
