THE RUNDOWN
DBU (8-2, 6-2) saw its six-game win streak come to an end Saturday afternoon, falling 3-1 to Texas A&M-Kingsville (10-2, 5-2) at the Steinke Physical Education Center in Kingsville, Texas.
Halee Van Poppel and
Audrey Nunes each recorded 10 kills, but the Lady Patriots' offense went cold in the final three sets to give the Javelinas a huge Lone Star Conference win.
Â
Aryn Walton's first of two service aces gave DBU a 10-5 advantage early on in the opening set. TAMUK would respond, eventually coming to within one at 12-11, 13-12, and later 19-18. The Javelinas managed to tie the first frame at 21-apiece, but the Lady Patriots tightened up defensively and got the stops needed to clinch a 25-22 win.
Â
Audrey Nunes would notch four kills in set two, helping the Lady Patriots stay close with TAMUK at 13-10 halfway through, but a pair of Javelina runs proved to be too much to recover from. DBU put forth a valiant effort, scoring four straight with its back against the wall while A&M-Kingsville sat on set point. Ultimately, the Javelinas were able to tie the match on one of Emily Witt's season-high 45 assists.
Â
DBU jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead in set three, but the momentum was short-lived. A 7-0 TAMUK stretch changed the tide, and then another 6-0 run by the Javelinas gave the home team all the cushion required to secure the 25-18 win and go up 2-1.
The Lady Patriots never held a lead in the fourth set, trailing early before evening up the score at 10-10. Both teams would exchange scores before a 9-1 TAMUK burst put the match on ice. DBU would turn to Van Poppel for offense, but multiple attack errors gave the Javelinas the 25-14 victory.
