Hughes, Patriots Roll to 86-72 Win Over Eagles

THE RUNDOWN
On Thursday, DBU (5-2) wrapped up its road trip with an 86-72 win over Oklahoma Christian (2-5). Season-high performances from Carson Hughes (24 points) and Ricky Lujan (18 points, five assists) led the Patriots to their second straight win and their highest offensive output of the season.

The DBU offense was white-hot in the opening 20 minutes. The Patriots shot 73% from the floor and 5-for-9 from 3-point land against an Eagles' defense that had no answer for Ricky Lujan. The sophomore guard generated 12 of his 18 points in the first half as DBU entered the break with a 10 point lead.

Carson Hughes would score the bulk of the Patriots' second-half points. The senior notched 16 of his 23 points in the final frame, punishing OCU at the charity stripe with a flawless 6-for-6 performance. It was an efficient day for the entire offense. DBU committed just seven turnovers on the day, providing Oklahoma Christian few opportunities to grab easy points on fast breaks. In a mechanical effort from the free-throw line, DBU turned 14-of-16 attempts into points for the double-digit win.

COACH BLAKE FLICKNER ON THE WIN
"That was the best overall game for us this year. It was the closest thing to a complete game we've had so far. Only seven turnovers, and 18 assists is great to see. A lot of guys contributed and gave us some really good minutes. Carson was great, and Jules [Julian Miranda] and Ricky combined for seven assists and zero turnovers and it felt like they always made the right play."
