THE RUNDOWN
The No. 1 nationally ranked DBU Women's Soccer team traveled up to Oklahoma City for a midweek Lone Star Conference matchup with Oklahoma Christian University on Wednesday evening. The Patriots would go into Eagle Soccer Field and come out with a 2-2 draw.
On a misty and windy evening, the Patriots (8-0-1) would start the game off dominating possession right away. In the first half, the Patriots were able to keep the ball on their attacking half for the majority of the game. Going forward, the Patriots weren't able to connect on the final product at the end of several chances; however, in the 19th minute of the match,
Ashley Merrill would put in a cross that would find a great
Delaney Schmidt run and see the ball bounce off of the crossbar, the ball would land at the foot of secondary runner
Abigail Olmos who would put the ball away for her for her first goal of the year and the first of the night for DBU. OCU goalkeeper Gabby Goddard would make several good stops for the Lady Eagles to see DBU only leave the first half with a one goal advantage.
In the second half, DBU would continue to maintain the majority of the possession in the game. Oklahoma Christian would see more chances going forward and were able to get two goals in the half, giving them a 2-1 lead in the 87th minute of the game. The Patriots would respond right away when
Ashley Merrill would score her 13th goal of the year off of an excellent pass from
Gabrielle Heller in the 88th minute to send the game into overtime in Oklahoma City.
Overall, the Patriots would control the majority of the game but were unable to connect the final pass or get the final touch to net a winner. DBU would come out of OCU with a 2-2 draw.
THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
- With
Abigail Olmos getting her first goal of the season, the Patriots now have eight different goal scorers on the year. Six of those players have multiple goals, with three having at least five.
- Five players have now started every game for DBU this year. Seniors
Delaney Schmidt,
Kaci Parks,
Melissa Jones, and
Summerlyn Heller have all gotten the nod. Freshman
Marit Auee is the fifth Patriot to start every match.
- Even though this tie snaps an eight-game win streak for the Patriots, DBU continues to maintain a tremendous amount of possession. DBU was just one step away today in the attacking third, but the team was still very solid in keeping control of the ball.
HEAD COACH MICHELLE LENARD ON THE GAME
"We learned some hard lessons today. The game wasn't going how we had hoped and it took us too long to respond. Credit to OCU who worked very hard and put themselves in a position for this outcome. We just lacked focus when it mattered most and we gave up poor goals. We will learn from this and get better."
