THE RUNDOWN
DBU (3-10) fell to Midwestern State (10-6) in straight sets (14-25, 12-25, 17-25) in the first round of the Lone Star Conference Tournament in San Angelo Tuesday night, concluding the 2020-21 volleyball season.Â
Bailey Hebert recorded two of her team-high eight kills early in the opening set to give the Lady Patriots a brief lead, but a quick 7-0 Mustangs run created separation.
Brooke Clark and
Carly Earnest both chipped in a pair of kills in the opening frame to give the DBU offense life. However, a .375 attack percentage from MSU resulted in a quick end to the opening frame.
Both DBU and MSU put together runs in the second and third sets. After falling behind 4-1 in the second set, the Lady Patriots stringed together a trio of points – capped by the team's lone service ace, courtesy of Bailey Whitehead – to tie things up. The Mustangs responded with a 7-2 run, and eventually took 8 of the set's final 9 points.
Four straight points early in the third set gave DBU its largest lead of the night at 5-2, solidified by back-to-back blocks from
Alyssa Parks and
Macey Winburn.
Cathy Kokel's squad maintained a slim lead throughout the first half of set 3, but Midwestern State pieced together a quick 8-0 surge to go up by six. DBU responded with a trio of points to stay close with the Mustangs at 17-14. MSU ceded three more points on errors, but found the needed firepower to close out the match.
