Patriots Rout Evansville with Incredible 13-Run Third Inning

THE RUNDOWN
The Patriots bashed their way to a 20-1 run rule of the Purple Aces on getaway day, taking their third straight conference series. DBU (25-11) used a 13-run 3rd inning to put the game on cruise control.

The Pats jumped on the scoreboard early once again as River Town singled home a run in the first. Andres Sosa blasted a solo HR in the second to make it 2-0. Then, in an eye-popping third inning, DBU plated 13 runs on nine hits. River Town swatted a three-run blast to start, followed shortly thereafter by a massive three run blast from Blayne Jones. Jackson Glenn, Jace Grady, and Cole Moore all drove in RBIs with singles. Sosa would then launch his second home run of the day, another three-run shot, to cap off the biggest single inning in DBU history.

While the game's outcome was far from in doubt, DBU continued to work quality at bats. Jones would lift a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning, while George Specht would sting an RBI into left field in the sixth. The Pats would add their final two runs on a wild pitch and another Sosa single.

DBU's offense was electric at the plate, but the pitching was also outstanding. Luke Eldred, Cole Reeves, and Ross Carver combined for six no-hit innings on the mound. Eldred still has yet to allow a run in his time on the bump this season, going three sterling innings and striking out four. Evansville finally would break up the staff no-no in the seventh inning, getting a run on three hits.

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
- The 20 runs on 19 hits are both season highs for the Patriot offense in 2021.
- Sosa returned to start at 3rd base for the first time since 2019 when he also started against Evansville.
- The 13-run inning was the second most runs ever scored in an inning by DBU, running up only the 15 run inning the Patriots put up on April 21, 2007 against UT Pan American (Now UTRGV).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
5
– Five Patriots recorded multi-hit games in the series finale, but no one was better than Andres Sosa who went 4-for-5 with six RBI.
6 – The six no-hit innings are the best staff performance of the year, nearly finishing a feat that hasn't been accomplished by DBU since February 25, 2006 when the Pats no-hit UTA.
13 – All thirteen Patriots players who entered the lineup today reached base in the win.

ANDRES SOSA ON THE OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION:
" I'm just trying to keep things simple, the same approach and same mentality. We have a dynamic offense. I think this group of guys is very unique and we just love to hit the ball. We want to win this championship."

UP NEXT
DBU returns home for two weeks. First up will be their series against Illinois State which will run from May 7-9.
