For the second year in a row, DBU Student-Athletes were able to grant a wish to a Make-A-Wish family due to fundraising efforts in the previous year. DBU's Homecoming was that much sweeter this year because of a Make-A-Wish kid who loves New York and the Home Alone movie. Wish kid Gunner has been waiting years for his wish to be granted. All he had ever wanted while going through treatments was to take a trip to New York and live out a "Home Alone Experience. during the Christmas season. Fortunately, his wait is over!
Upon the start of the 21-22 academic year, members of the DBU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) set a goal to fundraise enough money to grant a child's wish. Throughout the year, SAAC and FCA partnered together and promoted the DBU Make-A-Wish Raffle. Their goal was reached upon the conclusion of the 21-22 academic year. DBU student-athletes raised over $10,000 to make a child's wish become a reality. These funds are what will allow Gunner and his family to take the trip of a lifetime to New York this Christmas season.
Gunner and his family were asked to represent Make-A-Wish in DBU's Homecoming parade. The truck they sat in pulled a Make-A-Wish float that was designed by DBU SAAC and FCA. The float integrated Gunner's love for New York and Home Alone. When the float made it to the main stage for all homecoming festivities, it made an unexpected stop. Gunner and his family joined DBU SAAC and FCA on the main stage and were surprised to find out that Gunner's wish was being granted! Later in the night, Gunner and his family were celebrated by the entire homecoming crowd at the homecoming basketball game. You can watch Gunner's wish reveal recap video here.
DBU SAAC and FCA are kicking off their Annual Make-A-Wish Raffle to grant another wish next year! Be sure to buy raffle tickets now to help grant a wish and an opportunity to win one of many great prizes!
