Home Runs Lift DBU to Game One Win Over Oral Roberts

THE RUNDOWN
DBU took game one over Oral Roberts 7-4 Friday evening in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Three different Patriots left the yard, and Jacob Meador earned his fourth win while Zane Russell delivered a career-high five strikeouts in 2.0 innings out of the bullpen. With the win, DBU (10-7) takes control of the three-game series and wins its fifth in a row over ORU at J.L. Johnson Stadium.

Both teams placed runners 90 feet away in the second inning, but it was ORU (12-6) who capitalized with an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead into the third. Mathieu Vallee sparked the Patriot offense with a leadoff single into left field and scored off the bat of Jace Grady, who belted his sixth double of the season off the wall in center field. The DBU damage would continue in the explosive frame. Andrew Benefield walked to join Grady on the basepaths, and everyone came home on a three-run bomb by George Specht that sailed over the right-field wall.

The 4-1 lead was cut down a run as ORU scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third. But DBU got it right back in the fourth inning when Nate Rombach crushed a pitch to left field for the second home run of the day. Jackson Loftin would be the final Golden Eagle to push a run across Jacob Meador, who improved to 4-0 and struck out seven in 6.0 innings innings of work.

Zane Russell began his two-inning shift of shutdown baseball in the seventh frame, mowing down five Golden Eagles on a single hit. DBU fired off its final two runs in the eighth inning when Cole Moore blasted a two-run shot to right field to give the Patriots a 7-3 advantage.

After being retired in order in the home half of the eighth, Oral Roberts would tack on one final score in the ninth. Right-handed pitcher Kyle Rich would immediately squash the comeback attempt and induce a groundout to end the ballgame.
