DBU Takes Series Over No. 20 Maryland, Wins Rubber Match 5-2

THE RUNDOWN
The DBU Patriots bounced back to take the weekend series over No. 20 Maryland, 5-2 Sunday at Horner Ballpark. The win moves DBU to 15-8 on the year and hands the Terrapins (18-5) their first series loss this year.

A season-high four hits from Jace Grady powered the offense, and a standout performance by Bubba Hall and the bullpen helped outduel a Maryland lineup with five batters hitting over .300. A pair of walks and a single into right field set the stage for a UMD comeback in the ninth, but Chandler Arnold induced a lineout to George Specht for DBU's fifth consecutive series win.

For the third time in as many days, the Terrapins struck first in Sunday's rubber match. A solo shot from Maxwell Costes put Maryland in front through two innings of action. Trouble threatened in the third as UMD threatened to add to its 1-0 lead. A single and a controversial double into right field were followed by a Costes walk to load the bases with two away. But catcher Nate Rombach would recover a wide pitch that bounced off the brick wall behind him and applied a critical tag to strand all three Terrapins.

After the defensive stand in the top of the inning, the DBU bats got to work in the bottom of the frame. Jace Grady scorched an RBI triple past UMD center fielder Chris Alleyne to tie things up at 1-1. Andrew Benefield then stepped up to the plate and grounded out to the right side to bring Grady in from third.

With two outs in the fourth, Bubba Hall checked in to inherit a bases-loaded jam. The junior quickly recorded the first of his season-high six strikeouts. Then, insurance came in the form of a Jace Grady RBI single that laced into right field.

DBU tacked on another two runs in the sixth. After Hall retired his seventh-straight Terrapin, Nate Rombach ripped a solo shot over the wall in left field. Grady would then double down the right-field line and come home on an Andrew Benefield base hit for DBU's last run of the day.

COACH DAN HEEFNER ON THE WIN
"Maryland is a really good ball club. I think we just continue to get better...Sometimes you have to go through things in season to find out who you are and gain some confidence. Our guys responded really well today. It was a great sign to have Ryan Johnson out there today and set the tone for us with the way he attacked. Bubba Hall did outstanding in his relief appearance, and I thought we did a good job battling through some at-bats."

BUBBA HALL ON HIS CAREER DAY
"What I am expected to do when I get on the mound is fill the zone. The whole time I was in the bullpen, I was visualizing the zone... I was able to stay ahead in the count and catch guys off guard a little bit."

ON DECK
The Patriots will travel to Ruston, Louisiana, on March 29 to face Louisiana Tech on Tuesday.
