THE RUNDOWN
DBU completed a 6-5 comeback win over No. 6 TCU at Lupton Stadium on Tuesday. The Patriot offense roared to life for a four-run eighth inning, and
Zane Russell earned the save with four strikeouts over two frames to erase a 5-2 deficit and complete a season sweep of the Horned Frogs (27-14).Â
Ryan Wrobleski led the way with three hits and two RBI for a DBU offense that outhit the Horned Frogs 13-6. The Patriots got off to a shaky start, spotting TCU a pair of runs on errors in the third and fourth innings. But DBU (25-15) found its footing as the game progressed to storm back and take a game that felt destined to go the other way.Â
Trailing 1-0 after an RBI double,
Cole Moore drew a walk to open the second inning. He would then score on a
Ryan Wrobleski base hit driven into left field.
But after the early response, TCU went on a 4-0 run that was fueled by three DBU errors.  After an RBI single in the third inning, Tommy Sacco reached on a fielding error and eventually came around to score to extend the TCU lead to 3-1. Another RBI single and a run scored off a throwing error left DBU in a 5-1 hole after the fourth inning.Â
The Patriot comeback began in the sixth whenÂ
Jace Grady reached on a walk and scored all the way from second base on a bloop single by
Cole Moore.
After getting a run back in the sixth and loading the bases in the seventh, a DBU offense that had threatened to blow open the game finally did so in the eighth inning.
Andrew Benefield began the hit parade with a single and
Cole Moore doubled to left field. With two on and nobody out,
Blayne Jones drove in the first run of the inning with a base hit into left field. Then,
Ryan Wrobleski made it a 5-4 ballgame with an RBI single hit to the same location. In the blink of an eye, Nate Humphreys tied it up with a single up the middle, and
Miguel Santos brought the Patriots all the way back with a base knock that gave DBU a 6-5 lead.Â
After 2.1 innings of no-hit baseball from
Bubba Hall and a scoreless inning from
Peyton Sherlin,
Zane Russell took to the mound to complete the comeback win. The right-handed hurler gave up a base hit to the first batter he faced but would refuse to buckle, striking out two to get DBU out of the eighth inning.
The Patriots went down in order in their half of the ninth before Russell came back to the home half of the frame, striking out two more and inducing a fly out to end the game.Â
