Grady Breaks Record, Patriots Yield to Baylor in Extras

THE RUNDOWN
In their second 12-inning game of the year, DBU (7-5) dropped a tight contest in Waco to Baylor (5-8). Junior Jace Grady broke Austin Krum's Division I program record for most career stolen bases in the third inning with a swipe of second base.

After a scoreless first frame, Nate Rombach led off with a single and crossed home plate on a Luke Heenfer double immediately following.

Four batters later, Noah Bougton recorded the first two RBIs of his DBU career driving in Heefner and George Specht, who had reached base via a hit by pitch.

With the Patriots leading, 3-0, Baylor scored in three of the next four innings to creep into the driver's seat, 5-3.

In the seventh, DBU once again pieced together a three-run inning, this time without the aid of an extra-base hit. With Tom Poole and Kodie Kolden on base, Grady, Miguel Santos, and Nate Rombach each put the ball in play to score a runner, and the Patriots were back in charge, 6-5.

Down by one in the bottom of the ninth with one out, Gavin Brzozowski hit a fly ball over the fence of the right field corner to even the score at six.

Rombach played hero from behind plate in ninth, throwing out the next runner, Kobe Andrade on an attempt to steal second. Without the play, the Howard College transfer would have scored the game-winning run via a double by Hunter Simmons, who was behind Andrade.

The Patriots were able to take advantage of defensive mistakes by the Bears in the 12th to put themselves in a winning position.

Following a two-out walk by George Specht, Nathan Humphreys reached on a fielder's choice, and Specht advanced to third on an error by shortstop Hunter Teplanszky.

While Ethan Mann was at the plate, a pitch got away from the catcher, Harrison Caley, allowing Humphreys to touch the plate and put DBU ahead, 7-6.

In the home half of the 12th, Baylor manufactured two runs using three singles, a wild pitch, a defensive error, and a walk.

With runners on the corners, Teplanszky scored from third base to tie the game at seven runs apiece.

Four spots down the order and with a man at each base, freshman Kolby Branch drove in the final run of the game on a walk-off fly ball to right field that sent DBU back to Dallas with a loss.
