THE RUNDOWN
With the wind blowing in from center field, DBUÂ (21-9, 7-3 C-USA) claimed a 2-1 win over UAB (10-19, 3-7) on Thursday night at Horner Ballpark.
Miguel Santos drove in both of DBU's runs, including the game-deciding solo home run in the eighth.
Â
Both starting pitchers were firing on all cylinders Thursday night. After giving up a double in the bottom of the first, Patriot-righty
Ryan Johnson retired 14 consecutive batters, a streak broken up only by a Patriot fielding error in the sixth. Johnson responded with back-to-back strikeouts and was not pulled off the mound until the top of the eighth following a Brayton Brown home run.
Â
In the longest outing of his career (7.0 innings pitched), the sophomore allowed only one run on two hits and punched out nine batters without surrendering a free base.
Â
For the Blazers, Brooks Walton worked 5.2 innings, giving up only two hits through five frames.
Â
In the sixth,
Jace Grady worked an eight-pitch at-bat for a triple.Â
Miguel Santos then pounded a ground ball through the six-hole for an RBI single that gave DBU a 1-0 lead.
Â
The Brown homer in the top of the eighth tied the game, but with one out,
Miguel Santos put the Patriots back in front with a solo shot of his own.
Â
With his team ahead, 2-1,
Kyle Amendt faced the minimum in the ninth, striking out two of three batters, to earn the save for DBU.

DAN HEEFNER ON DBU'S TIMELY HITTING
"We got quality at-bats when we needed it.
Jace Grady gets the triple. Then,
Miguel Santos, he's able to get that job done early, scores that run. And to answer with a home run after UAB hit theirs shows some toughness on our team."
