DBU Baseball Draft Picks

DBU Sets Program Record With Eight Draft Picks in 2023 MLB Draft

The DBU Baseball team saw a school record eight players selected in this year's Major League Draft. The Patriots' eight draft selections were tied with Arizona State and the University of Tennessee for the fourth-most draft picks in the nation. In the 20-round draft that featured 614 selections, only LSU (13), Wake Forest (10), and Stanford (9) produced more draft picks than DBU in the 2023 MLB Draft.

Three Patriots heard their names called in the top 10 rounds highlighted by junior right-handed pitcher Braxton Bragg, who was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the eighth round. A transfer from the University of Nebraska, Bragg was a Second Team All-Conference USA selection in 2023 after going 9-2 with a 4.19 ERA. In 86.0 innings of work this year, Bragg struck out 92 batters, a mark that ranks as the ninth-most in a single-season in DBU Baseball's Division I era dating back to 2004.

DBU closer Kyle Amendt and right-handed reliever Zane Russell each went to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the ninth and tenth rounds respectively. Amendt, a First Team All-American in 2023, led Conference USA in saves with 12 and struck out 51 batters while issuing just 14 walks in 25.2 innings. Russell finished his junior season with 17 appearances and compiled a 2-1 record with one save and a 2.35 ERA. In 30.2 innings on the mound, Russell struck out 48 batters while holding opponents to a mere .159 batting average against.

On day three of the draft, Jace Grady was the first Patriot off the board when he was taken by the Atlanta Braves in the 11th round. A Freshman All-American in 2021 and a two-time All-Missouri Valley Conference selection during his collegiate career, Grady set career-highs in six offensive categories this season including hits (77), home runs (12), slugging percentage (.534), stolen bases (25), triples (3), and walks (45). The fourth-year junior from Elgin, Texas, also set the program record for stolen bases and has successfully swiped 65 bases during his career.

Redshirt sophomore Bryson Hammer was taken in the 12th round by the Colorado Rockies. Hammer, a redshirt sophomore left-handed pitcher who began his collegiate career at Clemson, went 5-4 with a 5.14 ERA in 14 appearances including eight starts in 2023.

In the 13th round, the New York Yankees picked Brady Rose, a junior left-handed relief pitcher from Westminster, Colorado. Rose was a Second Team All-Conference USA selection in 2023 after going 7-2 with a 2.93 ERA in 23 relief appearances. His 74 strikeouts were also the third-most on the staff and his 14.47 strikeouts per nine innings ranks as the fourth-highest average in the program's Division I era.

Junior catcher Nate Rombach would be selected five rounds later when the Washington National selected him with the first pick in the 18th round. A transfer to DBU from Texas Tech in 2022, Rombach hit .288 with seven home runs and 35 RBI in 47 games this past season. It marks the second time in Rombach's career that he has been drafted after having his name called by the Miami Marlins in 2019 following his senior season at Mansfield Legacy High School.

DBU's final draft selection came 10 picks later when junior right-hander Alec Baker was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks. The native of East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, posted a 4-0 record with a 4.66 ERA in 24 appearances this past season. In 47 career appearances during his Patriot career, Baker is 6-0 and has compiled 71 strikeouts over 66.0 innings of work.

With DBU's school record eight draft picks, the Patriots have now produced 49 draft selections since 2015, a number that ranks as the ninth-highest total in all of college baseball. 73 players from DBU have also been selected in the MLB Draft during Dan Heefner's 16 years as the head coach of the Patriots.
