COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF
The DBU Men's Soccer team rolled over the Sul Ross State Lobos, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon at Lobo Soccer Field. This win is the Patriots' second of the season and first Lone Star Conference win. Two goals in the first half and two more in the final frame led the Patriots to their largest win since their 5-1 win over Oklahoma Christian on November 1, 2023.
The first half at Lobos started quietly for the Patriots as they didn't notch their first shot at goal, which didn't come until the 16th minute by Avery Brazzell. However, that first shot increased their momentum as DBU recorded their first goal nine minutes later.
Peyton Voelker took the free kick after SRSU fouled
Evan Pustejovsky sending a long ball toward the net and scoring the Patriot's first goal of the afternoon. Not four minutes later, the Patriots scored their second goal of the match, a sneaky go-ahead goal, to double their advantage.
Hunter Dierlam stole the ball from the Lobos midfield to pass it up to Voelker, allowing him to dance past the last defenders for the go-ahead goal. Voelker's brace gave DBU a multi-score advantage at the break.
DBU found immediate offense to start the second half in the form of a 51st-minute goal by Leo Larson, his first of the season. He would get a solid pass from a set-piece corner chance with a header into the net. Feeling the pressure the Lobos notched a couple of shots on goals with none being able to hit their intended target. Voelker looked to record a hat trick in the 60th minute but the shot was blocked awarding the DBU a corner kick. The Patriots quickly set up the set-piece chance, sending a long ball towards the net which was blocked by a SRSU defender. However, DBU quickly recovered as
Dominic Verdi was in the perfect spot outside the box as he sent a rocket to the net for the Patriot's fourth goal of the match. Defense stood tall in the second half with the Patriots limiting the Lobos to just 4 attempts across the final 45 minutes.
