No. 5 Patriots Fall to Lubbock Christian Despite Late Comeback Bid

THE RUNDOWN

DBU Basketball (9-2, 1-1) falls at home to the Lubbock Christian Chaparrals (7-3, 3-1) marking the program's first home and conference loss of the 24-25 season. In a game where the Patriots trailed by as much as 24, DBU brought it to within five points late in the second half. The Patriots' late comeback bid would get denied by the Chaparrals and DBU would ultimately fall 67-78. Xavion Brown led the group in scoring for the first time this season, as he put up 17 points while shooting 80% from the field. Brown also led the group in assists and was tied for the team lead in rebounds, totaling four in both categories.

Contrarily, the first half of tonight's contest was controlled by the Patriots. DBU was in front for 8:50 of tonight's 40 minutes, all of which came in the first half. The Patriots' largest lead of the night was by six points, coming exactly halfway through the first half. Cameron Kahn led everyone on the floor with 11 points in the first frame, followed closely by Brown's nine. The DBU defense was able to force seven turnovers in the first half but only cashed in four points off those turnovers. LCU would have nine points off DBU's four turnovers, doing more with less. This stat led to the Chaparrals chipping at their deficit and forcing a tied game going into halftime. This was the first time all season that the Patriots had gone into the break knotted with their opponent.

The early and middle portions of the second half were dominated by Lubbock Christian. The Chaps posted a 56.5% shooting percentage across the entire second frame, mirroring their first-half efficiency. From 12:35 to 6:50 specifically, LCU ripped off a 15-0 scoring run, while DBU turned the ball over five times. However, immediately after DBU went nearly six minutes without a point, the Patriots rattled off a 16-2 run of their own, climbing back to within a ten-point deficit with three minutes left. A Trevor Frank three and a Drew Calderon fastbreak layup was enough to cut it to five with a minute to go, but the Chaparrals were able to ice the game from the free-throw line.

The Patriots went 5-1 across their half-month homestand, and look to get back on track as they prepare for a five-game road trip featuring a Lone Star Conference palette.
