DBU Claims 9-5 Comeback Win Over Southeast Missouri on Opening Day

THE RUNDOWN
DBU Baseball completed a come-from-behind 9-5 victory over the Southeast Missouri Redhawks on Opening Day at Horner Ballpark on Friday. Trailing by three runs going to the bottom of the fourth, the Patriots scored seven unanswered runs, including a four-run eighth inning to break open the ballgame.

The Redhawks jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead after two first-inning singles, one of which would later score on a 2-6-3 caught stealing play.SEMO added another in the top of the second as back-to-back doubles from Bryce Cannon and Chance Resetich put the Redhawks up 2-0 in the second.

DBU's offense would get going in the second after Luke Heefner doubled home Tom Poole for the Patriots first RBI of the season. With one out in that same inning, DBU's nine-hole hitter Chayton Krauss would come through with an RBI groundout to tie the game at two.

SEMO would strike right back in the third with a Josh Cameron RBI double into right field to break the tie at 3-2. The Redhawks would add two more in the fourth to expand their lead to 5-2.

Luke Heefner brought in his second RBI of the day on a groundout to short to cut the Redhawks lead down to 5-3 after four innings of play.

Patriots' starter Ryan Johnson's day would come to an end after 5.1 innings of work, where he allowed eight hits and five earned runs while striking out seven and walking just one.
First out of the Pats bullpen was senior Nick Wilson, and he dazzled, going 3.2 hitless innings while striking out five and allowing just one walk.

The first Patriots home run of the season would come courtesy of Grant Jay, who blasted one over the left field wall to pull DBU to within one at 5-4. Three batters later, Michael Dattalo drove in Miguel Santos on a groundout to the left side to tie the game at five after six innings of play.

With the game still tied in the eighth, Heefner would come through again with an RBI groundout to give the Patriots their first lead of the day at 6-5. DBU added insurance runs in the form of three straight RBI doubles from Alex Pendergast, Chayton Krauss, and Nathan Humphreys to extend their newfound lead to 8-5.

Three outs away from a season-opening win, Nick Wilson slammed the door to help the Pats improve to 1-0.
