DBU Completes Sweep of SEMO With 6-5 Walk-Off Win in 11 Innings

THE RUNDOWN
DBU Baseball took home a 6-5 walk-off win over Southeast Missouri State on Sunday afternoon to complete a series-opening sweep at Horner Ballpark. Chayton Krauss' two-out single in the ninth plated Keaton Grady from second base, handing the Patriots' their third straight win to start the 2024 season.

DBU jumped on the scoreboard first when Grant Jay and Miguel Santos connected on back-to-back home runs in the first to put the Patriots up, 3-0.

SEMO struck back in the top of the third when center fielder Michael Mugan connected on an RBI single to cut the DBU lead to 3-1.

Grant Jay drove his second home run of the day over the wall in right-center to get that run right back, and the Patriots led 4-1 after three frames.

In the top of the fourth, the Redhawks executed a squeeze play to cut the deficit to two runs.

Patriots' starter James Ellwanger would exit after four strong innings, allowing just two runs over four innings while striking out four in his first collegiate start. TCU transfer River Ridings would be the first out of the DBU bullpen to make his Patriots debut. Ridings dazzled, throwing 2.1 hitless innings before turning it over to Jerrod Jenkins in the seventh.
With DBU still leading by two, SEMO's Michael Mugan continued his strong weekend with his second RBI single of the day to cut the DBU lead to 4-3.

Alex Pendergast blasted his first home run of the season over the left field wall to extend the Patriot lead to 5-3. The Redhawks would get that one right back as Bryce Cannon launched a solo home run over the scoreboard in right field to pull SEMO within one.

In the top of the 9th, SEMO shortstop Ben Palmer drove a solo home run over the wall in left-center to tie the game at five apiece. With a runner at first and one out, Mugan ripped a double into the right field alley, but a perfectly executed relay from rightfield Alex Pendergast, to second baseman Miguel Santos, and tag by catcher Grant Jay on Brooks Kettering nailed the potential go-ahead run at the plate.

With the game tied in the bottom of the 11th inning, Michael Dattalo drew a lead-off walk. Keaton Grady came off the bench to pinch run for Dattalo and reached second base on a Luke Heefner sacrifice bunt. With two out, Chayton Krauss lined a walk-off base hit into left field to win the game for the Patriots.
