No. 8 DBU Begins Two-Game Homestand Against Angelo State

COUNTDOWN TO TIP-OFF
No. 3 DBU clinched the Lone Star Conference East Division with an impressive 86-79 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday in Kingsville, Texas. Cameron Kahn put up a team-high 23 points, leading the Patriots to their 15th conference win of the season. 

Leading 7-4 in the game's first two-and-a-half minutes, DBU opened up a 13-2 run to take a 17-6 edge with 14:32 on the clock. The Javelinas answered with their own 28-11 surge over the next 10 minutes to take a 34-29 lead. Taking advantage of the Javelina's 12 first-half turnovers, the Patriots regained the momentum to take a 42-40 lead into halftime. 

Despite an early foul and a set of TAMUK free throws, the Patriots earned a 10-point lead, 57-47, after just five minutes of play. Trailing by 12, the Javelinas went on an 8-0  run to bring them to within four of DBU's lead, 65-61,  in a now two-possession game, DBU responded by stretching the lead back up to 11. TAMUK countered with an 8-0 surge to trim the Patriots' lead to three with 2:48 left on the clock. DBU would fend off the Javelinas, outscoring TAMUK 7-3 over the final two-plus minutes to secure the win.

On Thursday, the Patriots will return home to face Angelo State in the Burg Center. 

PATRIOT STORYLINES 
- DBU is ranked as high as No. 8 in the NABC Coaches Poll and is ranked in all three national polls. This ranking is the highest the Patriots have received in program history. 
- DBU ranks first in the LSC and ninth in the nation in steals, averaging 10.9 per game. The Patriots lead the conference and rank sixth in the nation for scoring offenses (92.8).  
- Defensively, DBU ranks first in the LSC and fifth in the nation in turnovers forced per game (21.13).
- Cameron Kahn leads the conference in points (334) and field goals (132). Khan was recently named on Bevo Francis's Top 50 Watch List. 
- Ricky Lujan ranks second in the conference in steals (30) and third for his assist/turnover ratio (2.60).
- Ta'Jay Dunlap also ranks second in the conference in steals (30).

SCOUTING ANGELO STATE
- Angelo State defeated Midwestern State 92-87 (3OT) in their 12th conference win. 
- The Rams rank second in the conference in three-pointers per game (9.3)
- Angelo State is ranked third in the conference in assists per game (15.4) and fourth in blocks per game (3.5) and fast break points (13.32). 
- Keyshawn Embery-Simpson is ranked second in the conference in Total 3- 3-point FGM (74) and third in field goals (157). Embery-Simpson leads the Rams in points (453).
- Trey Farrer leads Angelo State in rebounds (150). 
- Willie Guy leads the Rams in assists (96) and blocks (39). Dj Basey also leads the team in blocks (31). 

SERIES HISTORY
The Patriots lead the all-time series 4-2. Angelo State defeated DBU 64-43 in their last matchup in the Quaterfinal Round of the Lone Star Championship on March 3, 2023. This will be their seventh match-up since the Patriots defeated the Rams in an 84-82 overtime win on December 7, 2019.

The Patriots will remain home to face UT Permian Basin on February 24. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
