Lady Patriots Travel to California for Three Game Road Trip

LAST TIME OUT

On Friday, the DBU Women's Tennis squad improved to 9-2 after matches in Abilene, Texas. The Lady Patriots won both matches, defeating McMurry and Hardin-Simmons in a 9-0 shutout. 

In Friday's morning win over the War Hawks, Leonie Shondelmaier cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 at the line 1 singles position. Caroline Hudson (6-0, 6-0), Madalyn Smelley (6-0, 6-0), Emily Buchanan (8-0), Sarah Stewart (8-1), and Sarah Castleberry (8-1) each notched a win in singles play. In doubles, Sofia Teran teamed up with Isabella Arana Rios for an 8-0 win at line 1, while Hudson and Smelley and Payne and Castleberry went 8-1 to win at the line 2 and line 3 position.  

Friday afternoon saw the same action as Schondelmaier (6-2, 6-2) claimed another victory at the line 1 spot. She was joined in the winner's circle by Hudson (7-5, 6-1), Smelley (6-2, 6-2), Rios (6-0, 6-0), Teran (6-0, 6-4), and Buchanan (6-1, 6-0). Doubles play also saw the same winning action as Sofia Teran teamed up with Isabella Arana Rios for an 8-1 win at line 1, while Hudson and Smelley won 8-2 at the line 2 position, and Payne and Castleberry went 8-1 at the line 3 position.  


PATRIOT STORYLINES

- The Lady Patriots return to action when they face Menlo College, Fresno Pacific, and Stanislaus State in California. 
- DBU sits at 9-2 in the spring season.
- Through eighth matches, DBU is a combined 34-11 in singles play and owns a 21-3 mark in doubles. 
- Leonie Schondelmaier owns a 6-1 record in line 1 singles action, while Caroline Hudson (6-1) and Madalyn Smelley (7-1) also lead the Lady Patriots in singles play. 
- Isabella Arana Rios and Sofia Teran are 6-2 in line 1 doubles, while Caroline Hudson and Smelley teamed up to go 8-0 at the line 2 doubles position and Jenna Payne and Sarah Castleberry 4-0 at the line 3 position. 


SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

The Lady Patriots will face Menlo College on Saturday, Fresno Pacific on Monday, and end their road trip facing Stanislaus State on Tuesday. Menlo College competes at the NAIA level and is out to a 2-2 start this spring. Fresno Pacific competes at the NCAA Division II level and is out to a 1-7 start this spring. Stanislaus State competes at the NCAA Division II level and is out to a 1-4 start this spring. This will be the first time DBU has competed against the three California schools.


UP NEXT

The Lady Patriots will enter LSC Conference Play while traveling to Odessa, TX, to face UT Permian Basin on March 21 at 11 am.
