THE RUNDOWN
The 12th-ranked DBU men's basketball team used double figures to surge past UT Tyler on Saturday afternoon, 99-68, at the Burg Center. Cameron Kahn led the Patriots in points with 20 and was followed in double figures by Jaden Shelvin (16), Ricky Lujan (14) and Justin Haire (12).Â
Ricky Lujan connected on DBU's first basket of the evening and was quickly followed by a layup from UT Tyler. DBU maintained a slight stretch for the next four minutes until the visitors pulled through with a three-point jumper, sharing the lead with the Patriots. A three-pointer by Cameron Kahn established DBU's lead again, opening a 15-2 run and pushing the Patriots to a double-digit edge, 25-13, at the 10:24 mark.
 DBU extended its scoring run over the next three minutes with an Issac Bullard second-chance layup, making it a 15-point advantage, 31-16, after being sent to the line with 7:55 remaining in the first half. Another shot from deep, this time courtesy of Trevor Frank, made it an 11-0 run and stretched DBU's lead to 20 points, 36-16, with 6:29 left in the game. Coming out of the final media timeout back to back buckets from Justin Haire and Lujan extended the Patriots' lead back to 20 after UT Tyler trimmed the deficit. DBU stayed steady heading into halftime, leading 51-32.
A back-and-forth first five minutes of the second half saw DBU build its lead slightly, 65-42. UT Tyler drew within 18, 67-49, at the media timeout. A layup by David Bradley pushed the Patriots ahead to their biggest lead of 24, 78-54. Back-to-back shots from Kahn and Jaden Shelvin triggered a UT Tyler timeout with 8:02 on the clock.Â
The Patriots pushed their lead to 30, 93-63, on the back of two Haire free throws with 5:37 remaining. Taking advantage of the visitors' foul trouble, the Patriots went on a 12-2 run for over four minutes before closing out a 99-68 victory.Â
