No. 7 Patriots Sweep New Mexico State With 13-3 Win

THE RUNDOWN
No. 7 DBU defeated New Mexico State 13-3 Saturday afternoon at Horner Ballpark to sweep the series and improve to 5-1 in Conference USA play. The Patriots pulled away from the Aggies by scoring 10 runs in the final three innings and run-ruling New Mexico State for the second consecutive game.

The Patriots struck first early again versus the Aggies, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a Grant Jay sacrifice fly.

New Mexico State wasted no time responding with a two-run homer in the second from Logan Gallina to take their first lead over DBU this weekend.

In the third, Ethan Mann crushed a two-run shot over the left-center wall, quickly giving the Patriots a 3-2 lead.

Freshman Luke Pettitte started his fifth game of the season on the mound and improved his record to 2-0 after the win. In 5.0 innings, Pettitte allowed a pair of earned runs and did not walk a batter while registering a season-high nine strikeouts.

After Pettitte's exit, DBU's offense got to work, adding a pair of insurance runs. With the bases loaded, Luke Heefner ripped a two-run single up the middle to extend the lead to three. Alex Pendergast then drilled a double down the left-field line to bring home Jay and add the thirrd run of the fifth.

One inning later, Mann hit his second home run and eighth of the season on a two-run shot to left. Later in the inning, Jay slammed a solo homer over the center field wall, his third round-tripper in the last two games.

Tyler Schott took over on the mound in relief of Pettitte, pitching 1.2 innings, allowing no hits and two walks, giving up one earned run, and recording five strikeouts.

The Aggies loaded the bases in the seventh and cut the deficit to 9-3 on an RBI single to third base. Minimizing the damage was Nick Wilson, who gave up a hit before closing out the inning with a strikeout.

In what would be the final inning, Mann took full advantage of the bases being loaded, doubling to center field and driving in three runs to put DBU up 12-3. Chayton Krauss delivered the final blow on an RBI single to center, run-ruling the Aggies in seven innings, 13-3.
