Patriots Pull Away for 9-3 Victory at FIU, Johnson Breaks Program Record for Strikeouts

THE RUNDOWN
DBU earned a much-needed 9-3 victory over Conference USA foe FIU in Miami on Friday night. A six-spot in the ninth added more than enough insurance runs for the Patriots to comfortably come away with the victory. In the win, DBU's Friday night ace, Ryan Johnson, set the program's record for career strikeouts.

For the second consecutive game, Grant Jay smashed a two-run homer to score DBU's first run in the second inning.

The Panthers responded in their half of the fourth inning on an RBI groundout, narrowing the deficit to 2-1. The run scored in the fourth would be the only run allowed by Johnson on Friday. In 8.0 innings of work, Johnson gave up six hits and did not surrender a walk while registering 12 strikeouts.

Clinging to a one-run lead into the eighth inning, DBU extended the lead to 3-1 when Chayton Krauss drew a bases-loaded walk.

Going into the ninth up by two runs, DBU took advantage of an error by the Panthers, putting Michael Dattalo on base and bringing home Alex Pendergast for a run. Continuing to add pressure, Michael Santos reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded, making it a 5-1 ballgame. Krauss then produced the hit of the game, a three-run double to left center to create an almost insurmountable lead.

The Patriots scored their final run on a wild pitch to take a 9-1 lead into the bottom of the inning. Zach Todd, who made his DBU debut on Tuesday night, was brought in to get the final three outs of the contest. Todd would allow a two-run homer but shut the door on FIU by striking out the side, giving the Patriots a series-opening 9-3 victory.

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Chayton Krauss tied a season-high with four RBI.
- Michael Dattalo extended his hit streak to nine games with a lead-off single in the 1st.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
