LAST TIME OUT

The semifinal match started out competitive in doubles play. At the line 3 position, Jenna Payne and Sarah Castleberry prevailed 6-4 to put DBU within one match and secure the doubles point. Sofia Teran and Isabella Rios at line 1 were licked in a close match which ended up with MSU winning the tiebreaker. It was left up to Caroline Hudson and Madalyn Smelley, who brought it home with a 7-6 win at line 2. The duo were down 2-5 but were able to rally back and save 3 match points.

In singles, the Lady Patriots came out strong, going up at lines 2,3,4, and 6, while lines 1 and 5 were close until the first lightning delay was announced. Players were then pulled off the courts for 45 minutes; despite the delay, Isabella Rios and Emily Buchanan were able to close out their first set in their matches, with Madalyn Smelley and Leonie Schondelmaier up big in their first sets, and Sofia Teran and Caroline Hudson in two close matches.

Yet another rain delay came, keeping players off the courts for 3 hours. When the match resumed at 3:45 pm, the Lady Patriots were ready as Emily Buchanan (6-1,6-4) secured the first singles point by winning her match at line 6, followed by Leonie Schondelmaier at the line 2 position, defeating her nationally ranked opponent, 6-4, 6-3. Isabella Rios (6-2, 7-5) closed it out as she clinched the match at line 4 to give DBU a clean sweep over the No. 6 team in the country.

This is the first time in program history that the DBU Women's team has advanced to the conference finals in the LSC. This has also been the Lady Patriots best win over their highest-ranked opponent,
