No. 24 Patriots Shut Down FIU to Stay Unbeaten in CUSA Tournament

THE RUNDOWN
No. 24 DBU defeated FIU 8-2 late on Thursday night at J. C. Love Field in Ruston, Louisiana, to advance to the semifinal round of the Conference USA Tournament. The Patriots' pitching staff, led by 6.0 shutout innings from sophomore right-hander Jerrod Jenkins, held the Panthers' offense in check, and home runs from Luke Heefner and Grant Jay powered the offense as DBU won for the second straight day at the CUSA Tournament.

Miguel Santos scored the first run in the first with an RBI double to right field. The following inning, Luke Heefner crushed a two-run homer to right field to give DBU an early 3-0 lead.

The Patriots would score in each of the first three innings of the ballgame, capped off by a sacrifice fly from Alex Pendergast in the bottom of the third.

In the sixth, DBU produced a four-spot to provide run support and help put the game out of reach. Santos added the first run off the inning on an RBI groundout to extend the lead to 5-0.

The next at-bat, Ethan Mann was the second Patriot to deliver a sacrifice fly to bring home another run. To finish off the inning, Grant Jay blasted his 19th home run of the season to center, giving DBU a comfortable lead.

In his start, Jerrod Jenkins improved his record to 6-0 on the season. In 6.0 innings of shutout baseball, Jenkins gave up five hits and two walks while registering eight strikeouts.

After Jenkins' exit, Nick Wilson and Dillon Haines were called on in relief. In 1.2 innings of work, Wilson recorded four strikeouts. Haines allowed a two-run shot versus the first batter he faced but did not allow a hit afterward and sealed the 8-2 victory.
