Patriots' 6-Run Lead Erased in Loss to Jax State

THE RUNDOWN
DBU fell 12-11 to Jacksonville State in game two of their series on Saturday at Horner Ballpark. The Patriots held leads of 9-3 and 11-6 over the Gamecocks, but Jax State rallied with nine runs in the final four innings to defeat the Patriots 12-11.

After a scoreless first two innings, Jax State got on the board in the third when Drew Collins ripped a two-out RBI single up the middle. The Gamecocks followed with a two-run shot from Brennen Norton to take a 3-0 lead over the Patriots.

After Nathan Humphreys was walked in the bottom of the inning with two outs, Michael Dattalo launched a two-runner homer over left center to pull DBU within one.

Ethan Mann opened up the scoring in the fourth with a sacrifice fly to tie the ballgame. Next, Luke Heefner slashed an RBI single to bring home Miguel Santos.

Batting in the eight and nine holes in the order, Alex Pendergast and Humphreys crushed back-to-back home runs to electrify Horner Ballpark and put the Patriots up 7-3 after the five-spot inning.

In the fifth, it was Mann's turn to get in on the action, hitting his 12th home run of the year on a two-run blast, creating a 9-3 advantage for DBU.

For the second consecutive game, Jacksonville State produced a crooked number directly following the exit of DBU's starting pitcher. In 5.1 innings of work, Jaron DeBerry gave up five earned runs on four hits and two walks while compiling seven strikeouts.

After Deberry's exit, the Gamecocks hit a pair of RBI singles to cut into the Patriots' lead. Jax State completed the three-run inning with a sacrifice fly, reducing the lead to 9-6.

Starting the bottom of the inning with a Pendergast walk and Humphreys double, Dattalo delivered a sacrifice fly to get DBU into double digits. Chayton Krauss followed suit with an RBI single to bring in the second run of the inning.

The Gamecocks would put together another three-run inning in the seventh, narrowing the deficit to 11-9 on just three hits. A pair of RBI doubles and a sacrifice fly were all it took to get Jax State back into the game.

After a full-count walk with two outs in the eighth, Brennen Norton evened the game at 11 with a two-run homer. The Patriots ended the run with an excellent sliding catch by Pendergast in right field.

In the top of the ninth, Derrick Jackson Jr. crushed a lead-off solo home run to shock the Patriots and give Jax State a 12-11 lead.

Down a run, Santos opened the ninth with a lead-off single to bring the winning run to the plate. A Mann flyout to deep right-center, a strikeout of Grant Jay, and a foul ball out off the bat of Luke Heefner ended DBU's comeback hopes in a 12-11 loss to Jacksonville State.
