No. 21 Patriots Suffer Season-Ending Loss to Grand Canyon

THE RUNDOWN
No. 21 DBU's 2024 season ended with a 12-10 loss to Grand Canyon in the Tucson Regional on Sunday afternoon at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson, Arizona. The Patriots led 8-3 in the fifth inning, but the Antelopes used a 19-hit performance to make up ground in the middle innings and take the lead for good in the eighth.
 
Tom Poole opened the game with his third homer in two days to put DBU up 2-0 in the first. The following inning, Grand Canyon would respond with a three spot on an RBI groundout, single, and double to take the lead from the Patriots.
 
DBU would land a wave of punches in the coming innings, started by an RBI double from the red-hot Poole. The next run would come in after Ethan Mann hit into a double play but brought a run home to make it 4-3.
 
The Patriots did not ease off the gas in the fourth or fifth, as Chayton Krauss hit a run-scoring single through the right side to continue the momentum. Poole added two more RBI on his second double of the ballgame to give DBU a 7-3 lead. An inning later, Mann crushed a solo shot to center to put the Antelopes in a five-run hole.
 
GCU began to narrow the deficit in the bottom of the inning, with the first run crossing the plate on a Patriots' fielding error. A sacrifice fly and RBI single enabled the Antelopes to quickly narrow the deficit to 8-6.
 
In the sixth, Poole reached on a fielder's choice to bring home Michael Dattalo and get a run back from GCU.
 
The bottom of the sixth proved to be the most pivotal of the contest, as Grand Canyon delivered three doubles and an RBI single to put up a four-spot and take a 10-9 lead over DBU. The Patriots swiftly evened the score on a Luke Heefner sacrifice fly in the seventh, but Nathan Humphreys was picked off at second to end the rally.
 
Closer Conner Mackay entered the seventh to help cool off the Antelopes' explosive offense. Mackay got DBU out of a bases-loaded situation by fanning a batter and inducing a groundout. Still tied in the bottom of the eighth and with two outs, GCU loaded the bases again. This time, the Anteloples pushed two runs across on a pair of walks to take a 12-10 lead. With the bases still loaded, Tyler Schott entered and struck out the first batter he faced to keep DBU within striking distance in the ninth.

After Miguel Santos and Mann ground out and flied out, Grant Jay was walked on a full count to bring the tying run to the plate. Humphreys battled but grounded out to the right side, sealing the Patriots' 12-10 season-ending loss.

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
DBU's Chayton Krauss and Tom Poole were named to the Tucson Regional All-Tournament Team. Krauss led the Patriots with a .462 average, going 6-for-13 in the tournament. Krauss also had one double and two RBI. Poole hit .429 (6-14) and led all players with three home runs to go along with a pair of doubles and a tournament-high 10 RBI.
