DBU joined nine other top Division II programs in Lakeland, Florida, for the 2025 Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic two weekends ago.
​
The Patriots went 0-2 on the trip, falling to No. 13 Michigan Tech and No. 2 Washburn, but carried the lead into halftime in both contests.
​
Trailing by three in the final seconds of regulation against Michigan Tech, the Patriots had possession and the full length of the court to go with less than four seconds on the clock. As Xavion Brown crossed half-court with the clock flashing red single-digit numbers, he found Daniel Figueira in the corner for a catch-and-shoot three, and Figueira splashed it, sending the game to overtime.

DBU would be held without a field goal in the overtime period, losing a rollercoaster of a season-opener.

The next day, Washburn was able to out-rebound DBU 50-29, and was able to finish the game with a 12-point lead over the Patriots despite heading into the halftime break down two. DBU slashed 37.5 / 30.3 / 70.4 efficiency-wise in the loss to Washburn (fg% / 3pfg% / ft%).

PATRIOT STORYLINES
New Heights: DBU entered the season ranked No. 3 in the country by the NABC. It is the highest preseason ranking in program history.
Doctor's Note: The reigning Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year, Dr. Blake Flickner, holds a career coaching record of 375-217.
Defend The Belt: The Patriots were picked to win the Lone Star Conference in the LSC preseason poll.
Quick Hands: DBU led the country in steals per game (13.10) and turnovers forced per game last year (22.53).
Wide Margins: Last season, the Patriots led the Lone Star Conference in average point differential, with a +13.5 clip.
Digging Deep: DBU led the Lone Star Conference in bench points per game last year (33.61).
Clutch Factor: Trevor Frank and Xavion Brown led everyone in the postseason last year in the steal department, totaling 19 and 17, respectively, during the Patriots' playoff run.
String Music: Trevor Frank finished second in the country in three-pointers made during the postseason last year.
Immediate Impact: Transfer guard TJ Thomas leads the team in free throw percentage (.917) and is second on the team in points with 29 (Drew Calderon - 30).

SCOUTING (RV) COLORADO MESA
- In the 2024-2025 season, the Mavericks posted a 19-10 record, following a 29-5, round of 16 run in 2023-2024.
- Last season, Mesa's campaign ended in the first round of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament, where they were the three-seed. They fell to the six-seed Fort Lewis 89-65.
- The Mavericks received a limited share of top-25 votes in the NCAA DII preseason rankings.
- DBU defeated Colorado Mesa in the South Central Region Challenge last fall, 92-69.
- Colorado Mesa is led by three returning starters, one of whom is redshirt senior Ty Allred, a 6'9 guard who made the All-RMAC First Team last season.
- Last season, Allred finished top ten in the RMAC in the following categories: points per game (14.7), rebounds per game (6.4), blocks per game (0.83), three pointers made per game (2.07).
- Mason Honeyman and Harvey White are the two other returning starters for the Mavericks.
- Head coach Mike Dunlap enters his second season with Colorado Mesa and his 23rd season as a collegiate hoops head coach (441-242).

SCOUTING COLORADO CHRISTIAN
- Last season, Colorado Christian finished with an overall record of 13-15 (9-11 RMAC), missing the conference tournament.
- The Cougars finished their season with consecutive wins against Regis and MSU Denver at home.
- Last season, Colorado Christian was third best in the RMAC in bench points per game, and fourth in rebound margin.
- Schafer Reichardt averaged the most points for any current Cougars returner last season at 7.1 ppg. Reichardt contributed a slash line of .404/.268/.705, and added 4.9 rebounds per game last year.
- Schafer's brother, Andrew Reichardt, is a senior transfer from Western Colorado University, entering his first year as a Cougar.
- Colorado Christian head coach Liam Simmons enters his sixth season as a collegiate head coach, all of them as a Cougar. He has an all-time record of 46-85 heading into the new year.
